The premise is fairly simple. The Hellsing organization (run by the Protestants, no less) has been around for about a century bringing down the various undead creatures that pop up across the globe. The organization is headed up by Integra, a woman who so closely resembles a bishounen that even the most trained anime fan's eye will have trouble discerning her exact gender at first glance. She controls Alucard, an uber-powerful vampire who does all the things you'd expect vampires to be able to do and takes out vampires and zombies with ruthless efficiency. Watching these characters interact is a joy; the dialogue and character interaction here is charmingly written and executed. Hellsing has the honor of being the most character-driven horror series ever.

The show isn't without its problems, though. Animated by the rich and famous Studio Gonzo, they opted for the money-saving techniques on this series. After the first episode, which is beautifully animated and brings the unconventional and daring character designs to life, the animation quality gets wildly inconsistent. Characters are frequently off-model and change from scene to scene. I'm not sure why the vampires have gigantic tongues but it winds up looking poorly-drawn and gets fairly distracting at times. After the first 8 episodes or so, the series derails a little and starts developing an “original” storyline that has nothing to do with the manga series it's supposed to be based on. Anyone who's seen enough Rurouni Kenshin knows what happens when good anime series start wandering off the path set down by the manga. Fortunately, Hellsing's turn for the worst calms itself down enough to remain enjoyable throughout the entire 13-episode run.

True, it relies on action to tell the story more than words, but in series like Kyuuketsuki Miyu, the monster of the week typically gets more screen time than the title character. Horror almost never focuses completely on characters. Hellsing does the opposite; the characters are given as much detail and background as possible. We see Victoria, the confused neonate, stumble around and struggle with her newfound unlife. It's painful to watch, and yet captivating. Therein lies the beauty of Hellsing; it isn't just about blood and guts. Well, okay, so it is about blood and guts.. but the violence is tempered with drama that takes itself seriously enough to validate the entire thing.

Having a volume focus more on Domoto trying to please Choko makes for a refreshing new angle, however fleeting. Moments of Domoto acting more like a gentleman, however absurdly executed at times, is actually a domineering feature with less time spent seeing him being overly-controlling or just downright creepy. He steps up to help Choko and her family, comforts her when she needs it and rushes to her aid when he feels she requires it. Even all pride-wrenching problems aside, he remains determined to see to it Choko remains sexually satisfied as well. While sex itself, though predominantly suggested more than ever shown, in shoujo manga isn't entirely uncommon, seeing a woman receive oral on a flower-background page certainly stands out in a book with Shojo Beat neatly printed on the spine.

On her side of things, Choko is dead-set on Domoto dropping the formalities between them which stem back to his original role as servant to her family. In previous volumes, with Domoto spending so much time coercing or outright forcing her into things, it was often a surprise being reminded of these overhanging roles. Even now it only feels evident when Domoto is pampering her for reasons that don't directly suggest he's just out for sex, flash-backing to their childhood or during the moments when Choko takes steel-faced verbal control of a situation and Domoto bows back in welcome subjugation. In just such an instance, Choko gives Domoto an ultimatum that turns almost all past conflicts on their head - have full, all-the-way sex with her or else he must renounce their roles as Milady and servant.

Relationship troubles and family dynamics aside, Butterflies, Flowers is a comedy through and through. While not anywhere near as necessary in this volume as it has been in the past, the comedy has always been an integral part of being able to look past how unsettling the lead relationship often is. It's easy to just sit back and focus more on how much fun reading the story is despite it. Viz Media's edition comes alive with the adapter's snappy word-choices, complimenting the artist's physical humor and offering plenty of laugh out loud moments in combination. Masayuki Domoto is as dominating in this element of the story as he is in the 'romance' and for a welcome change of pace readers will spend much of this fifth volume laughing entirely at his expense. He weeps over misconceptions of his relationship with Choko, and reels at a description of his impotence lacking any kind of emotional consideration. From wacky poses to soul-crushed expressions, this is another volume that doesn't disappoint those who've stuck around for the laughs, which is probably the majority of readers at this point.

"Rurouni Kenshin: Seisouhen (roughly translated: the passing of years)" is a new two-part OVA series based on a story by Kenshin creator Nobuhiro Watsuki. It owes it's existence to two factors: Japanese fans who desired an ending to Kenshin's animated adventures more in keeping with the manga, and strong sales in the U.S. of the first Kenshin OVA series, billed here as "Samurai X". In trying to appeal to such a diverse fan base, "Seisouhen" fails to please either group. The first part (part two is yet to be released) is little more than a confused jumble of flashbacks from the television series, re-animated, along with a few bits from the previously unadapted Revenge Arc of the manga.

The bulk of the first part of "Seisouhen” is comprised of scenes from the first two seasons of "Rurouni Kenshin", re-imagined in the more realistic style of the first OVA series. As in the previous OVA the animation is of much higher quality than it's TV counterpart, in places rivaling the work of Disney. Unfortunately it's a waste of a great opportunity: instead of redoing the numerous action-packed battles that were "Rurouni Kenshin's" hallmark, the creators have chosen to revisit the quiet, more romantic sequences between Kenshin and Kaoru. Not that there's anything wrong with romance, but the exquisite animation is put to waste as the characters sit still and talk to one another in scenes we've already seen before. The one fight that has been completely redone is Kenshin vs. Jinei, and as expected it is a beautifully animated scene that far surpasses the original version. Swords clash in a fully-animated fury that even exceeds the gorgeous fight between Kenshin and the Shinsengumi that capped off the first OVA series. One waits in vain to see some of Kenshin's other famous battles so gloriously brought to life.....instead we are only treated to very brief shots of Kenshin defeating Sojiro and Shishio.

Well-timed jokes and boarding school antics could describe any manga title among the dozens out there, but mixed in with the right dose of weirdness, it makes for a unique and amusing blend in Here is Greenwood. With a strong core of oddball characters and a visual style that strips away flowery excesses, this manga will provide a good hour's worth of amusement. That Mushi-Shi is a unique series of extraordinary merit is beyond reproach. To deny this is to refuse to acknowledge that the series has done something truly different. By melding its music, visuals, voice work, and storytelling into a unified whole, it spins stand-alone stories of sublime beauty which speak to the essence of life and death in a style which harkens back to ancient fables told around a fire at night. The serene mood it establishes, even when dealing with the fantastic and/or dangerous mushi, can wrap a viewer up in its wonder. It can also, unfortunately, bore viewers unable or unwilling to slide into the comfortable place the series constructs, and can get tedious if too much of it is watched at once.

While the quality of the series may be inarguable, its entertainment value is very much subject to debate. So much of its ability to involve its viewers depends on acceptance of the low-key, spiritual tone that some are going to find the series intolerable, and volumes 3 and 4 do nothing to change that. Those who prefer an ongoing storyline of some sort, or like to become attached to characters over the long term and watch them grow, may also find it hard to connect with the series, since nearly every episode is completely independent of the others and the only recurring character – Ginko – never develops much beyond his base persona.

Those who can get into the spirit of the series will find several captivating stories about ordinary people's interaction with phenomenon beyond their comprehension, ones which Ginko can try to help them understand and live with. The mushi, as portrayed here, are neither good nor evil, neither outwardly benevolent nor inherently malicious, although they can be dangerous and certainly have both positive and adverse effects on those who get too closely involved with them. Dealing with them is like dealing with nature; there are no foes to be defeated here, just creatures to be understood and compensated for. That storytelling approach incontrovertibly set the series apart from all of the brighter and flashier anime series out there.

As mentioned before, the artistry and music function more to craft a unified whole than impress individually, creating a beautiful overall package which absorbs its minor flaws without being weighted down by them. The background art and mushi designs do impress, but the true visual appeal lies in how the series frames its shots, uses its special visual effects, and combines everything to promote a certain effect; one of the Extras on volume 3 reports that about 80% of the series was re-shot in pursuit of just the right look, and that attention to quality control shows. The gentle musical score flows smoothly out of the English language opener and into the closers without a hiccup or change in style, along the way gently punctuating key moments and evenly promoting the spiritual tone and subdued mood.

That mood also carries through the voice acting in both dubs, as the number of times in these eight episodes that characters actually raise their voices can probably be counted on one hand. That doesn't allow much room for expressive acting, and on top of that the English dub is even more dedicated to maintaining the atmosphere than the Japanese dub. The one-shot performances encompass a myriad of normal Funimation and ADV dub actors, from old-timers like Tiffany Grant to prominent newcomers like Brittney Karbowski, and will neither excite nor disappoint in most cases. Few people would think of turning to a high-spirited sci-fi series for romance, but Volume 4 of Stellvia proves that it can hold its own against any other girl-meets-boy anime out there. Rather than going for wacky antics or sniveling melodrama, Stellvia plays it straight up and honest, bringing Shipon and Kouta together in a very "aww"-inducing way. This honest approach to storytelling also works for the darker side of the series when Ayaka succumbs to her own ambition and jealousy, and the resulting fallout makes us feel sympathy for both the victim and the aggressor. It's not just Shipon's show anymore—now she's learning where she stands with the other students aboard Stellvia. Our little meatball-headed space cadet is truly coming of age, and yes, this series is getting better.

The English dub of Stellvia still has its ups and downs, but it's getting a better grasp of the character roles. Carrie Savage handles Shipon's innocence and growing confidence quite well—except for the pre-episode narrations. For some reason, Savage sounds terribly self-conscious during narrations, but she does fine when she's got other people to respond to. Side characters like Kouta, Ayaka and Yayoi also do a capable job of voicing everyday teenagers, especially in the pivotal dramatic scenes. The dubbed dialogue still has the occasional timing hiccup, but stays true to the translation; even the characters' joking formality of referring to Yayoi as "oujo-sama" becomes "milady" in English.

It's at this point in the series that some of the music tracks start to recycle considerably, and there are about two "action" themes that keep coming up during spaceflight. However, with personal drama taking up most of the episodes here, it's the restrained solo melodies that get the spotlight. Overall it's nothing spectacular, but even something like a single acoustic guitar during Yayoi's confrontation with Ayaka transforms the scene from being just a conversation into a truly touching moment. A new ending theme is also introduced, but it's not as catchy as the first ending song.

Nothing's ever perfect, though, and with Stellvia it's the animation that doesn't match up to the standards of the story. Watch the characters perform any complex movements and it's clear that smoothness and frame rate aren't very high on the priority list. Neither is creative camerawork, as there are lots of "talking head" and eye-level shots throughout. The CGI is still respectable, as shown by the Bianca training flights and new visual navigation system, but they're not even used in two of the disc's three episodes. On the other hand, the color scheme remains consistently bright, and the red-colored sky provides a new counterpoint to the students' orange and blue uniforms. The character designs also maintain their lively, youthful style, although they deserve better than the plain backgrounds that they're often set against. (The backgrounds do improve in Episode 13, where Shipon and Kouta briefly return to Earth and get to wander around a lush Pacific island.)

The end of the Great Mission has also brought us another bonus: the end of Shima Katase as an insecure crybaby. Even after Ayaka roughs her up on the training ground, Shipon keeps her composure and tries to understand why Ayaka did what she did, rather than wallowing in guilt or self-pity. Because of Shipon's heartfelt concern, we get to see Ayaka as a sympathetic character (although she spends a bit too much time lying in bed and looking miserable). The back story between Yayoi and Ayaka also gets a full explanation; add this to the budding romance with Kouta and you've got a full range of emotions being explored in these three episodes. Even without the space station, it's still a fine example of high school drama.

While other space adventure shows try to sneak a feeble romantic plot in between all the galactic battles, Stellvia makes no such pretenses. The first major story arc is over, so why not be all-out cute? That's what happens in Episodes 12 and 13 when Shipon and Kouta fall in love, and while it's a commonly traveled path, rarely is it done with so much honesty. Even when Shipon and Yayoi handle the troubled case of Ayaka, they take a straightforward approach, with everyone saying exactly what's on their minds. This kind of directness is rare in a genre that's full of hidden motives and double-crosses, which is why the characters are so engrossing even when the pace slows down. However, there is a darker subplot going on, but the hints are so blatant (notice whenever the adults stand around looking serious) that they can be forgotten until the bad stuff actually shows up. In the meantime, enjoy the cuteness, because puppy love doesn't get much better than this—space-age or otherwise.

Enterbrain's Famitsu website has begun streaming a 180-second promotional video for the original video anime based on Tobi's Megane na Kanojo romantic comedy manga on Tuesday.
The original manga was an omnibus-style collection of eight stories about girls with glasses — including a literature club sempai, a tsundere (aloof and abrasive, but secretly affectionate), an airhead, an oneesan (older sister type), an elementary schoolgirl, and a popular idol.

The anime will feature four stories, including ones about the sempai and the idol.

The cast includes Satomi Moriya, Asami Imai, Saori Hayami, Kana Hanazawa, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Daisuke Hirakawa, Atsushi Abe, and Hiro Shimono. The anime will begin shipping in Japan on November 25.

Trivy and Sammy's Kaitō Tenshi Twin Angel magical girl slot machine game franchise will get a new web anime, web radio program, and comic in 2010. There will also be a Kaitō Tenshi Twin Angel 2 Card Collection, a White Angel figure, a Kurumi character dakimakura (hugging pillow) cover, and other goods planned for sale this year. The new items were announced via a movie and a flyer that were first released at the Comic Market 77 convention in Tokyo at the end of 2009. (In the linked page, select the first movie icon on top.)

Kaitō Tenshi Twin Angel began as a pachisuro (pachinko-parlor slot machine) game with Yukari Tamura and Mamiko Noto as Haruka "Red Angel" Minazuki and Aoi "Blue Angel" Kannazuki. It already spawned a manga in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shonen Ace magazine in 2007 and a two-volume video anime series in 2008. The creators had hinted at a new project after the release of the first video anime volume in 2008.

The Kaitō Tenshi Twin Angel 2 franchise followup adds a new character named Kurumi "White Angel" Hazuki, played by Rie Kugimiya.

Iron Vendetta Episode 0 Special watch Subbed

The team behind the Kōtetsu no Vendetta (Iron Vendetta) military robot project announced in a Saturday blog entry that production on project's first full anime episode has been green-lit. To celebrate the announcement, the project's creator Thumbnail posted a new 59-second promotional video on the Nico Nico Douga video website. (An earlier, two-minute promotional video was posted on the YouTube website in December.) The creators aim to finish the episode next year.

The project began with a still "picture drama" short, which eventually evolved into a partially animated pilot film. The dōjin (self-published) creators sold a preview DVD at Tokyo's Comic Market 75 convention last December, and will distribute a new release at this summer's Comic Market 76.

The official website for the Kōtetsu no Vendetta (Iron Vendetta) military robot anime project began streaming an advance promotional video for episode 0 on Monday. The video lists the voice cast that includes Ami Koshimizu as the heroine Rain Yashima and Rie Kugimiya as Flor. The project began as a series of dōjin (self-published) shorts by the unit Thumbnail, but the Japanese arm of the French company Ankama Games agreed to produce the anime.
